🇱🇻 🇪🇺 #Latvia joined the #EU in 2004 and pegged its currency, the Lats, to the Euro in 2005 in a one percent band. This evolution shows that bond between Latvia and the EU had grown stronger. Latvia had substantially changed national institutional structures and managed to stabilise its economy to meet the accession requirements.

📈The first years of Latvia within the EU were marked by a flourishing economy and new possibilities. This can be seen in the strong growth of the #GDP as well as in the rising of trade between Latvia and other EU-members. Especially, the great expansion of imports from EU indicates that the relationship between Latvia and EU has improved further.

💸The #financial crisis obliged Latvia to restructure its public service because the only remaining lever was fiscal policy. From 2012 until today various projects aiming to support regional development and cohesion within the EU are carried out.

🦠The #covid-19 crisis is seen as an opportunity for Latvia to restructure its economic sector towards a more sustainable pattern of competitiveness. The EU further also support Latvia’s recovery by financial means. Thus, EU-integration is an ongoing process in Latvia.

🪜🇪🇺Big steps have been made in the past but there is no point where #integration is accomplished. In the wider debate, it is even discussed whether further integration is beneficial to the EU or not. Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are more integrated together in the #Baltic Region than in the EU.

🇫🇮 Obwohl Finnland heutzutage hauptsächlich zu den nordischen Staaten gezählt wird, galt es einst als baltischer Staat. Auch heute sind einige Parallelen zwischen Finnland und den baltischen Staaten, besonders Estland, festzustellen. Es ist daher sehr spannend diese Länder und ihre verschiedenen Entwicklungspfade zu vergleichen.

💡 Zusammenfassend kann festgehalten werden, dass sich Finnland und die baltischen Staaten bis Anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts sehr ähnlich waren. Die unterschiedlichen Regime und Prägungen danach haben jedoch die Länder voneinander abgeschnitten und auf unterschiedliche Wege gebracht. Es lohnt sich daher auf jeden Fall, einen Abstecher in Finnland zu machen, um die baltischen Staaten besser zu verstehen.

Viktor Orbán und die Fidesz-Partei haben die parlamentarischen Wahlen im April 2022 zum vierten Mal in Folge für sich entschieden. Die nationalkonservative Fidesz hat mit der christlichdemokratischen KDNP eine zweidrittel Mehrheit im Parlament.

Dies lässt darauf schließen dass der schrittweise Umbau Ungarns in Richtung einer Autokratie für vier weitere Jahre fortschreiten wird. Orbán hat in seinen vergangenen Regierungsperioden die Kontrolle überunabhängiger Institutionen konsolidiert.

Der Grenzübertritt von #Montenegro nach #Albanien ist sehr unaufgeregt – der Bus hat quasi gerade erst #Podgorica, die Hauptstadt Montenegros, verlassen, und ist schon in Albanien und dort in der fünft größten Stadt Albaniens, #Shkoder. Gut, denkt sich die Reisende dann, die Sprache ändert sich, aber ansonsten – geschichtlich gesehen war doch überall #Kommunismus, nicht wahr? Die Antwort darauf kann nur lauten „Nicht wahr!“. Genauer gesagt sind die Auswirkungen der unterschiedlichen kommunistischen Systeme gar nicht zu übersehen.

Der Grenzübertritt von Montenegro nach Albanien entführt die Reisende in eine ganz andere Welt, als sie diese aus den Ländern des ehemaligen #Jugoslawiens gewöhnt war.

Die Reisende sieht ein Land in der Entwicklung, ein Land, in dem die meisten Nahrungsmittel noch selbst angebaut werden, das versucht Tourist*innen genauso wie seine Nachbarländer anzulocken und ihr Potential entdecken und entfalten möchte. Hilfreich sind die (vermutlich teils wahren) Vorurteil über Drogenhandel und Korruption hierbei natürlich ganz und gar nicht. Doch gerade hier versucht Albanien, ihre Außenwahrnehmung zu verändern – präsentiert werden die endlosen Bergketten, die Küstenstreifen, Tirana als florierende Metropole…

Tivat ist eine verwirrende Mischung aus Küstenleben, Alltagsleben und dem Leben der sehr Reichen. Mir war nicht bewusst, an was für einen Ort mein Reisegefährte und ich uns für mehrere Wochen niederlassen würden: Als wir das Stadtzentrum Tivats zum ersten Mal besuchten, fiel uns beiden die Kinnlade sehr weit herunter. Denn Tivat ist die Heimat des vermutlich in Kreisen mit sehr hohem Vermögen renommierten Porto Montenegro – quasi Monaco in klein und sehr viel neuer. Das Grundstück, wo Porto Montenegro entstehen wird, wurde 2006 von dem Ungarisch-kanadischen Millionär Peter Munk für 3.2 Millionen Euro gekauft, mit dem Plan eine Luxusyacht-Marina und Luxus-Unterkünfte zu errichten.

🇷🇺 Belarus, which has become part of the Russian military aggression, continues to play a significant role in it. At the same time, there is no doubt about the instability in the Belarusian domestic political arena, lasting since 2020, which causes the discrepancy between the official position and the opinion of the population, the assessment of the current state of affairs in the region and the role of Belarus in the observed processes.

⚠️It is important to emphasize that due to the continuation of the official Minsk policy of all kinds of restrictions on human rights and freedoms, repression against media, civil society, and political forces, it is extremely difficult to conduct any kind of opinion polls. Conducting public opinion research remains prohibited and criminally punishable at the State level.

☮️ In addition, to date, according to Belarusian human rights activists, 1,198 political prisoners have been illegally convicted in Belarus, which causes fear among respondents when discussing the political and public situation.
Despite the current situation, the Belarus Initiative of the Chatham House conducted a public opinion survey on April 8-15, 2022.

🔎Considering the conducted research, one should note that a third of the Belarusian population (32%) supports Russia’s actions in Ukraine, while 53% of respondents are confident that the war will bring negative consequences for Belarus.

🇷🇺Kaliningrad Oblast is situated on the baltic sea and despite being detached from the rest of the country, it is an exclave of the Russian Federation.

🌆The oblast's largest city and administrative centre is the city of Kaliningrad, formerly known as Königsberg. The territory was formerly the northern part of the Prussian province of East Prussia, the southern part of which is today part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland. With the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, the territory was annexed as part of the Russian SFSR by the Soviet Union. Following the post-war migration and flight and expulsion of Germans, the territory was populated with mostly Russians.

🪆Kaliningrad is still of great strategic importance to Moscow. It houses the Russian Baltic Fleet at the port of Baltiysk and is the country's only ice-free European port.

One of the heartfelt concerns of #FOMOSO is the promotion of people, organisations, initiatives and ideas that emphasize the exchange, integration and cooperation in #Central-Eastern and #Southeastern Europe (MOSO for short) or in Europe and strengthen the European development and the integration of the MOSO region.

That is why FOMOSO has set up a small #fund since 2022, which is used to support political, social and / or cultural projects from or in MOSO. Once a year – application period from May 1st to 31st – an open call for proposals for all kinds of political, social and cultural project ideas is opened in this context. A maximum of 1 to 2 projects are selected from this. The #grants per project will be a maximum of 300 – 500 euros.

Non-governmental organisations (#NGOs), civil society organisations, municipalities, schools, universities, institutions (research institutions and scientific institutions) as well as associations, initiatives and committed groups (a minimum of three people) can participate in the tender.

🇩🇪🇲🇩 Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeie war am 29.09 zu einem zweitägigen Besuch in der moldauischen Hauptstadt Chisinau eingetroffen. Es ist der erste Besuch eines Bundespräsidenten in Moldau, das vor drei Jahrzehnten unabhängig wurde.

‼️ Steinmeier sagte im Namen der Bundesregierung ein Unterstützungspaket von zehn Millionen Euro zu:

„Mein Besuch ist also beides: eine Würdigung des politischen Aufbruchs und ganz konkrete Unterstützung. Heute habe ich die Zusage der Bundesregierung für Mittel der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit in Höhe von knapp 10 Millionen Euro im Gepäck. Damit will Deutschland den Reformen, die Sie, verehrte Frau Präsidentin, angestoßen haben, einen zusätzlichen Impuls geben.“

In the age group 25-34 years old, more than half known at least one foreign language (58.9 %), English is the language that dominates, while in the age group 35-64 years old, this ratio decrease to the same levels as three other mentioned languages

📖 30.7 % of population aged 25-64 have read at least one book during their free time. Women are those that show more interest in reading books during free time, 35.8 % of them have read at least one book, against 25.6 % of men, during 12 last months.

❗️Since independence (1991) and until now, the population of the Republic of Moldova has decreased by one and a half million. The number of Moldovan citizens is now 2.900.000, including citizens of Transnistria. According to the latest statistics, every fourth citizen is abroad, which means 26% of the entire population of the Republic of Moldova.
